What is Pricelessware? How are Pricelessware programs chosen?
How to find a Pricelessware program. The history of Pricelessware.
What is Pricelessware?
The Pricelessware List reflects the programs favored by participants in the alt.comp.freeware newsgroup; it is not an exhaustive list of the best available Freeware. Most of the listings are well-known programs, but there are some hard-to-find goodies to be discovered. Although most categories will list only 1 or 2 selections, a few will list 3-4 programs.
The alt.comp.freeware definition of Freeware is: legally obtainable software that you may use at no cost, monetary or otherwise, for as long as you wish. When a program does not completely conform to alt.comp.freeware's definition of Freeware the program description will have a special notation. The program may be liteware, registerware etc. See the Ware Glossary for alt.comp.freeware's "ware" definitions: Ware Glossary
Licensing information may be noted. For example: open source (the source code is available for use and/or modification), GNU GPL (The GNU General Public License). Notes such as "Last available freeware version" may also be present.
There are NO Adware/Spyware programs on the Pricelessware List.
How are Pricelessware programs chosen?
A new list of Pricelessware programs is chosen once a year by alt.comp.freeware newsgroup participants. Programs are sometimes added or removed during the year. The list is reviewed regularly for updated versions. The Review Procedures web page has more information about the Pricelessware selection process: Pricelessware Review Procedures

The history of Pricelessware.
Pricelessware was originally intended to be a quick reference point for frequently requested Freeware programs. Initially dubbed "The Big List", it included programs old and new, well-known and obscure. The only requirement was that the program be the best Freeware program one could think of for each particular category.
The Pricelessware List is the brainchild of one of acf's regulars, Son of Spy. The term "Pricelessware" was coined by another regular at the time of creation, Tiger®. The Pricelessware graphics for the original page were created by Garrett.
The original Pricelessware List contained only the program names and download links. Individual pages including detailed program descriptions and Home Page links were developed by Genna Reeney.
A team of alt.comp.freeware volunteers: bob, Bronson C. Elliott, Keith Gardner, R.L., Roger Spencelayh, and Spacey Spade helped gather information for the Pricelessware 2003 web pages. Susan Bugher prepared the web pages. A Category Index was added and programs on the Alphabetical Index page were linked to their detailed descriptions.
The Cumulative Pricelessware List, alt.comp.freeware's Ware Glossary and many other web pages are relatively recent additions. The Pricelessware web site is continually changing. Come back soon to see what's new.
